Fish n Chip Road Trip Preparation

The Urvan is getting ready to embark on a sustainable journey around the circumferance of Australia powered by the stuff your fish & chips are cooked in.

the For Greenies Urvan

The renovated 1982 Nissan Urvan campervan with SD22 diesel motor will undergo a simple conversion for less than $500 that will allow filtered waste vegetable oil to be used instead of diesel fuel. Any diesel motor can be converted in this way, after all the inventor Rudolf Diesel’s first engine ran on peanut oil! In his mind he thought it would allow farmers to become self sufficient, growing their fuel and using it to operate their tractors and machinery.

The Vegie Cars site has the various products and information you need to do the conversion and For Greenies will be producing a DVD on how to do the conversion yourself.

The WVO will be sourced from fish and chip shops, pubs and wherever greasy golden food is cooked. We are hoping to meet other resourceful and self-sufficient people along the way who have also converted to WVO and are living sustainably.

Finishing touches are being added such as a 120 watt solar panel for the roof, to make life more comfortable on the road and to allow constant video and blog updates.

For Greenies is not endorsing the use of alternative fuels on a commercial scale where forests have to be cut down and monoculture crops planted to produce biofuel or ethanol. We do not think it is the fuel of the future nor do we want it to be. By doing this trip we want to emphasize resourcefulness, recycling a supposed waste material, and independence from the current fossil fuel systems that are imposed upon us.
